  • 2023 Lent - "I Thirst"
Lent is a time of prayer and penance when Christ wants to lead us back to our baptismal promises of dying to sin and of living for God.
      • Subscribe to Receive the Daily Lenten Reflection
    • "In his thirst, the dying Christ seeks a drink quite different from water or vinegar. Now, on the Cross, Jesus thirsts for a new humanity which should arise from his sacrifice in fulfillment of the Scriptures. The thirst of the Cross, is the ultimate expression of the desire of a baptism to be received and of a fire to be kindled on the heart, which had been manifested by him during his life. Now the desire is about to be fulfilled, and with the words Jesus confirms the ardent love with which he desired to receive that supreme "baptism," to open to all of us the fountain of water, which really quenches the thirst and saves." Pope St. John Paul II (General Audience, 1988)

In a letter to the Missionaries of Charity, St. Teresa of Calcutta elaborated on this message, "'I thirst' is something much deeper than Jesus just saying 'I love you.' Until you know deep inside that Jesus thirsts for you - you can't begin to know he wants to be (for) you. Or who He wants you to be for him."

This Lent, let us take Jesus’ words as our own: Jesus, I thirst for you. Jesus, I am emptied. Jesus, unite my thirst to your own.

  • FAST

    • Fasting
      • Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:
        1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.
        2. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.
        3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world.
        4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist - the truest of foods.
        5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments) - for the reception of grace.
        6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.
        7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.
    • Friday Abstinence
      • Every Friday of Lent: Ages 14 and older
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
More information on fast and abstinence can be found HERE.
  • ALMSGIVING

    • Let's Build a Church in Zambia!
      • As Last year, we are partnering with the members of St. Theresa Parish in Chainda, Zambia, to help them build their church. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise $43,481, which has been used to complete the steel frame of the church. With your support, Fr. Mathias, SMA is confident that the parishioners of St. Theresa will be able to finish their much-needed church. Learn more.
