At a past Men’s Hour, a member of my small group shared how he was consoling a grieving father on the loss of his son, which eventually led him to tell the father about our bereavement ministry. This man accompanied another on his journey toward healing. He was evangelizing. When you hear the word, evangelization, what comes to mind? Missionaries walking door to door, televangelists preaching on basic cable, or yourself living your life?
The Catholic Parishes of Arlington has as its mission the great commission in Matthew 28, where Jesus tells us that we’re all called to make disciples wherever we go. But how are we supposed to do that? How do we help others meet Jesus and learn about His Church in a way that is welcoming and inspiring?
When I was a new Youth Minister, I realized that relationships came before preaching—I had to earn the right to be heard. Having a relationship with someone helped me to frame the message. 1 John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
Building relationships is possibly the best way to share our faith. Even if our neighbors aren’t receptive to attending Mass or church activities, there are many ways in which we can evangelize:
Let Christ's love shine through the way that we treat others.
Pray for opportunities for sharing the Gospel with those we interact with on a regular basis.
Share your own story. Be willing to tell others what you are learning from your prayer life and how God is leading you.
Be honest about your struggles. It is important for people to understand that we are not perfect and we need Jesus too.
Be a friend through life's ups and downs. Persevering with someone through challenges shows them Jesus.
Remember, conversion is not our job. Be faithful and consistent, and God will do the heavy lifting. See you at Mass and on Mass Ave. - Scott
